The 5 exhibitions we’re looking forward to in 2017

Martin Margiela in Antwerp, David Hockney in London, Rei Kawakubo in New York… 2017 is setting out to be a busy year for museum-goers! Here are the 5 fashion and art exhibitions we’re the most excited to see (or Internet-stalk) this year.

David Hockney at Tate Britain (London)

"Peter getting out of Nick's pool", David Hockney (1966). Collection Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.

“Peter getting out of Nick’s pool”, David Hockney (1966). Collection Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.

The first retrospective of the Yorkshire-born, Los Angeles-based artist to date, from his early days in Bradford to his gigantic book for Taschen, released last November. The perfect occasion to see his famous Swimming Pool paintings IRL, as well as more recent works including his iPad drawings. Utterly unmissable. David Hockney, from February 9th to May 29th at Tate Britain, London.

Belgian designer Martin Margiela only stayed at the helm of Parisian fashion house Hermès for six years, but it was enough to transform the whole vision of the historical French brand – as well as impact the rest of the fashion world. Located just alongside the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where Margiela trained, the MoMu brings together pieces from his collections for Hermès from 1997 to 2003, all reunited for the first time, around the two major themes of Margiela’s creative vision : deconstruction and timeless luxury. Margiela. The Hermès years, from March 31st to August 21 at the MoMu, Antwerp (Belgium).

Dalida at the Palais Galliera (Paris)

Japan comes to New York! For its annual fashion exhibition, the Costume Institute of the MET Museum chooses to examine the career of esteemed Japanese fashion designer Rei Kawakubo. Elusive and mysterious, the designer is at the helm of successful brand Comme des Garçons, and, a true Paris Fashion Week regular, has been showing her collections in France since 1981. Known for her revolutionary approach to clothing and her distinctive avant-garde touch, Kawakubo’s inspirations will be explored via 120 examples of womenswear pieces she designed for the brand throughout the years, offering an extensive overview of her fashion experimentations. Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garçons, from May 4th to September 4th at the Costume Institute of the MET Museum, New York.

The American artist, who died in 1988 at only 28 years old, is seen as one of the biggest names of the downtown New York art scene, often linked to fellow graffiti artist Keith Haring (1958-1990). The self-taught artist – who is famously known for liking to paint in Giorgio Armani suits – first started out in the late seventies, hitting downtown to graffiti politically-minded statements across the city. This exhibition will shed led on some of his earlier works, as well as focussing on the influence that music and media had on the artist’s creations. Basquiat : Boom For Real, from September 21th 2017  to January 28th 2018 at the Barbican, London
