PHENOMENAL FASHION

Riders, set, go !

You can now forget all your prejudices you might had about cycling shorts : the controversial pants – to say the least – dictated a new sporty elegance on the Milanese catwalks.

Sports have been crawling up our lives as well as infltrating the fashion world, and the last shows in Milan are proof of it. Lately we have been riding bikes at the gym at the rhythm of heavy beats and coaches’ more or less motivating instructions as well as in the city, commuting or strolling around. It was then only logical that the cycling shorts eventually broke through and reached the spring 2019 catwalks. If the trend debuted in New York and Los Angeles with Fenty Puma spring 2018 collection (in which they remained quite literal though) and neo-supermodels like Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner, it seems bike shorts have become a thing way beyond US borders since. Brought up to fame by the advent of running and indoor sports (from yoga to Soul Cycle) which popularised sportswear in the city and on social media, bike shorts are a perfect alternative to the so-very-famous leggings. Standing to the test of the modern urban life thanks to their comfort, they turn out to be quite a surprisingly stylish piece of clothes, well mastered by the Italian houses which adopted them. Rare and scattered at the NYFW, the formerly abhorred lycra pants turned out ubiquitous in the Milanese collections : spotted from Fendi to Ferragamo.

Right under, 5 of the best bike-shorts outfits.

Roberto Cavalli

At Cavalli, Paul Surridge magnifed the bike shorts with no less than 16 looks out of 50. The bet was smart in every way : the Cavalli’s woman is radically more androgynous than under Peter Dundas’s reign.

Ferragamo

As nineties as can be, the only bike-shorts silhouette from the Ferragamo show is surprisingly simple and eficient. With colors far from the usual sportswear codes, the outfit is purely elegant and city-approved.

MSGM

With the mix of raw sportswear – the shorts – and a nightgown, MSGM follows up with the skirt-over-pants trend spotted this season… only thing left to see is if this will actually take of outside of the catwalks.

Prada

Half-bermuda, half-cycling shorts, Miuccia Prada hybrid piece rehabilitates even more this piece for any wardrobe. The shorts suit formaly the sixties atmosphere of the show, with their garçonne vibe.

Fendi

Unlikely and unlikely cool. Like Surridge at Cavalli, Sylvia Venturini Fendi and Karl Lagerfeld tried themselves with the cycling shorts. The result is bold, sporty and glamourous. Well done, in a word.
